Is it safe for an american to travel to the Ukraine?

Is it safe for an american to travel to the Ukraine? Wanted to know because it is close to Russia and the middle east and all. and i know that whole region is corrupt. and everybody knows people love kidnapping Americans.

It is safe for Americans. But like any country, it depends on you.

Use common sense. Don’t flash US dollars around. Don’t go into dark streets alone at night. Be careful when leaving clubs and discos late at night. And don’t dress like an American (dress a bit nicer, and try to fit in a bit).

And like any country, there are safer cities than others. But again, the risk factor depends on you using common sense.

Gee.. sounds like advice someone would give for going to London, or Los Angeles, or New York, or Amsterdam, or Paris, or… (you get the idea).

I find that the biggest thing Americans have to fear, is themselves.

As far as i know it is. My girlfriends father traveled to Italy then to Ukraine from Christmas till about the middle of January and he was completely fine. Of course him and his wife also speak the language and know their way around, but yeah I’d say it’s ok anyways.

I think it is quite safe. I remember my husband had the same opinion going to Belarus. Now we are both laughing about it. He told me that when he was on the plane to my country, he thought that he would either robbed or killed and would never be back to the USA. But he has been to Belarus 5 times already and want to visit my country again. And Ukraine is close to Belarus. I was in Kiev once, it was the best experience ever.

Its not near middle east I think your geography is a little bit off but it should be safe but Russia would be safer.

Ukraine is one of the safest countries in the world.Places such as Kiev are far safer than any place in America.or Britain.
You are far less likely to be robbed or attacked walking around the centre of Kiev at night than any other city in europe.
Having said that there are parts of Ukraine where there is criminal activity but no worse than other parts of europe.

1. to travel to Ukraine. No "the" please :)
2. yes, Ukraine is close to Russia (unfortunately). But don’t be afraid, KGB doesn’t have power upon Ukraine any more :)
3. Ukraine is not as close to the Middle East.
4. Yes, the whole region is corrupt. If you business here you’ll possibly have to bribe autorities. If you stole something you’ll sometimes be able to evade prosecution bribing the police. Time to time, you’ll have to bribe somebody for something. It’s bad, it’s very bad. It makes us less rich then we could be without corruption. It doesn’t make any danger, however.
5. Ukrainians don’t love to kidnap Americans. This "type of business" is not profitable in our country.
