How safe is travel in the Ukraine?
I heard crime was very high
If you have lived there how did you like it? I am looking to go to the Nikoleav area.Is the best way to travel by train?
1. it’s "Ukraine", NOT "the Ukraine".
2. You need to specify where in Ukraine. Ukraine is a pretty big country – about the size of Texas. The crime situation – such that it is – isn’t consistent all across the country.
3. You also need to specify what kind of travel – automobile, train, marshrutka, airliner, metro, or walking.
4. What are you afraid of?
Ukraine is a large and diverse country, struggling to find its own way after several centuries of Russian subjugation. It has its problems, as does any country – especially in this economy. But the people are hard-working and well-educated, and for the most part honest.
If you follow the fundamental precautions anyone would follow in any unknown place, you will be quite safe. Although it would help if you got your hearing checked – it’s apparently faulty.

Well firstly you are completely wrong about crime being high.
I have lived and worked in Ukraine, and am married to a Ukrainian national, and it is one of the safest countries in Europe.
Nikoleav is not one of the nicest places in Ukraine, but going by train from Kiev is probably the best way if you travel sv class on the overnight sleeper.( just don’t expect luxury lol ).
You will be safe travelling by train, but do learn to speak some Russian/Ukrainian or you will struggle

I wouldn’t say dangerous as much as difficult if you don’t know any Ukrainian or Russian (Russian probably better in the area you are going).
General common sense traveling rules apply. If you want sort of a comparison to Western Europe, I can tell you that I witnessed a lot more crime (pickpockets) and uncomfortable situations (aggressive begging) on a recent trip to Barcelona than I ever have in Odessa…
The swine flu that someone mentioned is right now a problem in just the Western part of the country. That’s according to 2 friends who are right now in Odessa. I don’t know how right they are about that, I never know how much to trust people’s word-of-mouth reports on such thing.

If you consider death-glares unsafe, you’d best avoid the whole country if you’re going to call it THE Ukraine.
I haven’t been there, but I do know that Odessa looks like Brooklyn, NY, since Brooklyn was modeled after it, and the "devushkas" in Kyiv wear really pretty clothes.
…Yeah, I doubt that helps. I think the best way to get information is to look up the blogs of people who have traveled there, otherwise, you’ll likely just get a bunch of stereotypers and history/fashion buffs.

A thirst for learning. Mmm, others’ bandwidth.
The same like UK,high risk of H1N1

how come you can’t say ‘the’ ukraine? i was in lviv, i found the public drunkeness unsettling until i remembered it was just cos i hadn’t been home in 3 weeks…
overall found it very safe and beautiful, but i came in on foot over the polish border. the guards blatantly, openly try to scare you into bribing them. (don’t, they’ll let you in anyway) the actual people were incredibly helpful and friendly in a way i have never seen in the west proper.
