how come you can't say 'the' ukraine? i was in lviv, i found the public drunkeness unsettling until i remembered it was just cos i hadn't been home in 3 weeks...

overall found it very safe and beautiful, but i came in on foot over the polish border. the guards blatantly, openly try to scare you into bribing them. (don't, they'll let you in anyway) the actual people were incredibly helpful and friendly in a way i have never seen in the west proper.
References :
1. to travel to Ukraine. No "the" please :)
2. yes, Ukraine is close to Russia (unfortunately). But don't be afraid, KGB doesn't have power upon Ukraine any more :)
3. Ukraine is not as close to the Middle East.
4. Yes, the whole region is corrupt. If you business here you'll possibly have to bribe autorities. If you stole something you'll sometimes be able to evade prosecution bribing the police. Time to time, you'll have to bribe somebody for something. It's bad, it's very bad. It makes us less rich then we could be without corruption. It doesn't make any danger, however.
5. Ukrainians don't love to kidnap Americans. This "type of business" is not profitable in our country.
References :
It is safe for Americans. But like any country, it depends on you.

Use common sense. Don't flash US dollars around. Don't go into dark streets alone at night. Be careful when leaving clubs and discos late at night. And don't dress like an American (dress a bit nicer, and try to fit in a bit).

And like any country, there are safer cities than others. But again, the risk factor depends on you using common sense.

Gee.. sounds like advice someone would give for going to London, or Los Angeles, or New York, or Amsterdam, or Paris, or... (you get the idea).

I find that the biggest thing Americans have to fear, is themselves.
References :
American who spends a lot of time in Ukraine

If you consider death-glares unsafe, you'd best avoid the whole country if you're going to call it THE Ukraine.

I haven't been there, but I do know that Odessa looks like Brooklyn, NY, since Brooklyn was modeled after it, and the "devushkas" in Kyiv wear really pretty clothes.

...Yeah, I doubt that helps. I think the best way to get information is to look up the blogs of people who have traveled there, otherwise, you'll likely just get a bunch of stereotypers and history/fashion buffs.
References :
A thirst for learning. Mmm, others' bandwidth.

What planet do you come from?
Ukraine is one of the safest countries in the world.Places such as Kiev are far safer than any place in America.or Britain.
You are far less likely to be robbed or attacked walking around the centre of Kiev at night than any other city in europe.
Having said that there are parts of Ukraine where there is criminal activity but no worse than other parts of europe.
References :
british guy married to a Ukrainian national, and spent a lot of time in Ukraine

If you have a cell with a sim chip you can take it any where in the world and change the cingular chip with a local one, when you get there just go to a phone store and ask for the sim chip and they will probably be happy to help you from there. The cost varies from place to place, in Kuwait they are 75$ but the Philippines they are like 10$ so you will be looking at some where in between there, I would recommend buying a international phone card with a Ukraine number because long distant calls will still cost an arm and leg.
References :
If you are from U.K. all you need is a passport. The visa requirement has been suspended for the foreseeable future.

Kiev is a truly stunning city. I backpacked through it so stayed in a hostel. Don't remember the name but it was on vulitsa Artyoma, although I did have to stay in a hotel on my first night (called Khreshatik right in the centre) and it was pretty standard, nothing special. My favourite restaurant was Puzata Khata. Dirt cheap, but I loved the food so much, It was proper Slavic stodge. There's really nothing better in my opinion. You must try 'salo'. It's traditional Ukrainian food. Basically, uncooked pig fat flavoured with garlic. It's vile but an interesting experience. Try it with a few vodka shots.

There's plenty to do in a kind of churchy-museumy way. My advice is to invest in a guidebook. Also, try to learn a little Cyrillic. Nothing is in English and the locals may not speak English very well so try to make an effort to learn a little of the language.

Have fun. It's really cool.
